An incredible 50/1 outsider, Mine That Bird romped to victory in the 2009 Kentucku Derby, six and a half lengths clear of race favourite, Pioneer Of The Nile. Ths win was by was the longest winning distance since 1946 and surprised everybody, including trainer, Choip Woolley. Mine That Bird will now take on 13 others in the Preakness Stakes in a fortnights time hoiping to win there and move on to a tilt at the Triple Crown.

The Kentucky Derby
It is a Grade One race for three year old thoroughbred horses, ran over a distance of 1¼ miles on the world famous Churchill Downs course. Many say that the race represents the most exiting 2 minutes of sport in the US Calendar year and others call it the Race for the Roses on account of how the winner each year is draped with a blanket of roses.
The Kentucky Derby history is a long and colourful one that has produced many Kentucky Derby legends who between them have helped enormously in cementing the race as one of the most famous in the entire world.

About The Kentucky Derby
The race this year will be contested by over twenty horses, who are likely to be headed in the betting by Old Fashioned and Fresian Fire. The 2008 Kentucky Derby was won by the outstanding Big Brown, who went on to take the second leg of the triple crown, when winning the Preakness Stakes, however he was unable to complete the Triple Crown after running with an injury in the Belmont Stakes. The Triple Crwon has only been won in fact by 11 horses in history and none since Affimed achieved the feat in 1978.

The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the US Triple Crown. It is followed by the Preakness Stakes just two weeks later with the final leg being the Belmont Stakes in June.
